“Dexter the dog is ringing the doorbell at his home in Kansas,” said a news anchor covering the event. “But no one is answering.” The video shows the dog pawing at the door to be let inside. He rings the bell and waits patiently for someone in his family to open the door. But Jeremy and Sarah, his owners, aren’t able to open the door. They can just watch the alert that someone is at the door and laugh at the antics of their adorable dog, Dexter.
An Unexpected Alert
“They got the notification on their phone that somebody was at their front door,” said the coverage. Video doorbells are popular with many homeowners and renters because they are easy to install and can give you peace of mind whether you are at home or away. You can set up notifications to alert you if someone is at the door so that you can monitor your home’s safety. Jeremy and Sarah were surprised to see that it wasn’t a delivery person or the mailman at their door. Instead, it was their furry family member wanting to be let inside. “We were both like ‘Oh my God, that’s Dexter,’” said Jeremy. Dexter had been at a boarding facility for dogs for three days while his humans were on vacation. He was supposed to be there for another two days but was missing his home too much. So, he hopped the fence and hightailed it back home. “From what I understand, there was a six-foot fence that he would have had to have gotten over,” said Jeremy. Dexter traveled for 90 minutes to walk the two miles back to his house. He made multiple turns and walked through busy roads and intersections, so intent on getting home that he wasn’t going to stop for anything. Dexter is known to be a protective pooch for his owners. Jeremy thinks that may be why the dog traveled so far to get home. What Dexter didn’t know was that his owners weren’t even home. After they realized that he was ringing the doorbell, Jeremy and Sarah called the staff at the doggy daycare to retrieve Dexter. That is one dedicated dog! His caretakers at the doggy daycare were able to come by and bring Dexter back to his temporary digs until his family returned from their vacation.
