Bears Climbing an Icy Rock Face
In the opening sequences, we see a mother bear and her cub climbing up a treacherous slope of rocks, ice and snow. They are moving incredibly fast given how steep the incline is and this baby bear has clearly already acquired some impressive climbing skills. The drone footage gives us a unique perspective and an appreciation for just how dangerous this climb is. There are very few flat ledges and many of the rocks are loose – we can see them falling away from underneath the bears’ feet. Then things get even worse. The bears need to cross some loose snow, and it falls away underneath their weight. This makes the bears slow down as they are constantly losing their footing. There are two heart-stopping moments when the baby bear slips about 20 feet down an almost vertical patch of snow but thankfully manages to get a grip before things turn deadly. The cub cleverly works out that following the path left by Mom bear gives better grip! Meanwhile, Mom is pacing around at the top of the cliff.
Disaster on the Rock Face
Disaster strikes just when the little bear is about to reach safety. Mom bear reaches out a paw to try to help but the little bear slips and plumets downwards. The fall is broken by an outcrop of rock and plants. But now there is a huge way to go. The little bear starts off again and tries yet another route. But it is hopeless. There is one section that the cub tries over and over again and keeps slipping back down. Mom paces back and for and peers over the edge as the little bear slips again and hurtles downwards even further and faster until another rocky outcrop brings them to a halt. The cub must be getting exhausted by now but has a long way to go! Finally, the little cub makes it to the top and races into the scrub behind Mom. Finally, the video shows the enormity of the slope that the two bears were climbing. You can’t help but wonder why on earth the Mom bear attempted it in the first place!
