Comparing The Miniature Husky vs. Pomsky

Miniature Husky vs. Pomsky: Size

Male miniature huskies are known to grow between 14 and 17 inches tall while weighing between 25 and 35 pounds. Female miniature huskies grow between 13 to 16 inches tall while weighing 20 to 30 pounds. Pomskies are smaller than miniature huskies as they only grow between 12 and 15 inches high and weigh from 20 to 30 pounds. The teacup and toy varieties of pomskies are shorter and weigh less than the average amounts.

Physical Appearance

Miniature huskies and pomskies share many physical similarities, making it difficult to tell them apart. For example, miniature huskies and pomskies have similar coat colors and variations, while both have heterochromia. Heterochromia is when the dog has two different eye colors. You can examine their fur to tell the miniature husky and pomsky apart. Pomskies’ fur is not as thick as that of the miniature husky.

Reason for Breeding

Bree Normandin bred miniature huskies. Normandin took Siberian huskies that were naturally smaller and bred them together until he achieved the miniature husky. Miniature huskies are suited better as companion dogs but are still classified as working dogs. Although miniature huskies and pomskies look very similar, they were not bred for the same reason. Pomskies were bred for their looks and designer appearance. Pomskies are more domesticated than miniature huskies and enjoy being spoilt.

Behavior and Temperament

The behavior and temperament of a miniature husky are very similar to that of a Siberian husky. Although miniature huskies are companion dogs, you must exercise them extensively and provide them with mental stimulation. Also, miniature huskies are classified as working dogs and enjoy doing tasks. Likewise, miniature huskies are social and enjoy spending time with people and other dogs. They are good family dogs but need supervision as they have high energy levels and are known to cause havoc if they become bored. Pomskies are also friendly and love being the center of attention. A pomsky needs supervision and attention, which makes them good family dogs, but only if the family spends large amounts of time at home. Unlike miniature huskies, pomskies can tolerate warmer climates well.

Miniature Husky vs. Pomsky: Lifespan

The lifespans of miniature huskies and pomskies are very similar. Miniature huskies have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years, while pomskies live an average of 13 to 15 years. Smaller dog breeds typically have longer lifespans than larger dogs, and these two breeds are generally healthy, meaning they will likely reach a ripe old age. However, although these are healthy breeds, they are prone to diseases like progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and hip dysplasia.

Miniature Husky vs. Pomsky: Diet

Miniature huskies and pomskies eat less than average-sized dogs due to their size. However, although miniature huskies eat less than average-sized dogs, they still eat more than the average small dog breed as they have high energy levels. Therefore, the diet of a miniature husky should be a low-fat, low-carb diet with more meat. The amount of food a pomsky need depends on its size. There are three types of Pomskies: toy, mini, and standard. Toy pomskies need to eat less than standard pomskies. Pomskies are known to be prone to allergies like itchiness and dry skin. The owner can alter their diet to combat these allergies as different types of food and kibble can combat allergies.

Grooming and Shedding

No matter the breed of the dog, grooming them should be part of every pet owner’s regimen. Miniature huskies need brushing a few times a week, depending on the season and their shedding levels. Undersized huskies have thick fur coats and shed after winter. Heavy shedding in miniature huskies takes place twice a year. Pomskies have a fluffy coat known to retain a lot of dead hair. The coat of a pomsky consists of an undercoat and a topcoat. The undercoat regulates body temperature, meaning pomskies should never be shaved. Instead, you should brush and bathe pomskies regularly to control shedding and for proper grooming. To properly wash your pomsky, you should start using a high-powered blower to release loose hairs from its undercoat. Then wash the pomsky with shampoo before applying the conditioner. The conditioner detangles the fur and adds shine to the coat.

Miniature Siberian Husky vs Pomsky: Exercise

Both breeds need daily exercise as they are energetic. Miniature huskies would benefit from three daily walks and a yard to play in. Pomskies would also benefit from three walks per day while they do not necessarily need an outdoor space. Both breeds would also benefit from mentally stimulating toys to prevent boredom at home, leading to them becoming mischievous around the house.
