Waterbuck Locked in Combat
The footage opens with a view of an expanse of water and we can hear some very loud bellowing! We see two large male waterbucks shoulder high in the water. Both are totally engrossed in their battle, they have no idea what is approaching them. The waterbucks were fighting over the mating rights for the females but the stakes are about to get a lot higher than that. A pride of around 15 lionesses are approaching and, eventually, they are spotted by the waterbucks. Lionesses often hunt in packs as this gives them a better chance of taking down larger and more challenging prey. One lioness enters the water, sending the waterbuck onto the opposite shore. The frightened animal does not realize that there are more lions waiting amongst the long grass and reeds.
Waterbuck vs Lion
The waterbuck bounds back into the water but the lion leaps onto their back. Despite being bigger and having very sharp horns, the waterbuck cannot shake off the lion who has plenty of muscle power and determination. The waterbuck fights bravely and drags the lioness through the water. She starts by sinking her teeth and claws into their back but then works her way around to the more vulnerable throat area. This was a gamble that does not entirely pay off. It puts her in a position where she can get kicked by the waterbuck’s powerful hind legs and this is exactly what happens. Meanwhile, several of the other lionesses are lined up on the shore taking notes! Eventually, she has no choice but to release – this is not the end of the story, however. The exhausted waterbuck makes a final break for it on the land but is chased down the rest of the pride. The end result is now inevitable and we get a final view of the pride enjoying their meal. Well done to the lioness for leading this successful hunt!
