There is already a ton of information we just don’t have about what lives in the ocean. It probably brings you a little bit of comfort knowing that this sea creature is no longer dwelling in the deep blue sea. This predator was so brutal that it would hunt and eat members of its own species. Sometimes, they would even consume other sea scorpions weighing up to 180 pounds. Sounds like humans could be a possible meal for these giant scorpions and again — thank goodness they’re no longer around. These aquatic scorpions have armored bodies. In fact, this is what puzzles researchers. They don’t quite understand how sea scorpions were able to munch down on other extremely large and externally protected animals. The video goes on to introduce a paleobiologist. His name is David Marshall. To try and understand just how these aquatic scorpions were able to devour their prey, he’s analyzing modern scorpions. He’s working to determine what they use to dominate and consume their prey. He starts with a modern scorpion’s exoskeleton. He then takes the teeth from this scorpion to study them under a microscope. He goes on to show you on his computer monitor that scorpion teeth are made of different elements. You can see that by the changes in the black and white gradient on the picture on his screen. He highlights that there is some zinc identified. Modern scorpions have a bit of metal in their claws. This is just evolution’s way of making scorpions even better predators. The video goes on with its investigative nature as the paleobiologist starts working with a blacksmith to understand just how scorpions function. This way, they can better understand the aquatic scorpion’s ability to crunch on its armored prey. The blacksmith is tasked with making two steel sword blades. You watch as the blacksmith works in the background with fire as the paleobiologist explains more in the foreground. Later, the blacksmith demonstrates how these two steel sword blades, though apparently similar, perform completely differently. You have to watch to understand just how the sea scorpion was successful in chomping through its prey.
