In the video, we can see that a large cargo truck is heading down a road surrounded by dense jungle on either side. Looking carefully, we can also see that there is a huge rhino sitting on the side of the road like a pedestrian at a crosswalk. As you might guess, some serious jaywalking is about to happen. As soon as the rhino sees the cargo truck getting a bit too close, it decides that no, it isn’t going to let this affront slide. Charging out, the rhino strikes the truck along the side just as the massive truck is barreling by. This may look absolutely ridiculous from the rhino’s perspective, but it’s important to remember that rhinos aren’t the most intelligent of animals, and their vision isn’t all that great either. According to Rhinos.org, these creatures have fabulous smell and hearing senses, but their vision leaves a lot to be desired. The site states “The white and greater one-horned rhinos are the third and fourth largest land mammals behind the African and Asian elephant, and all four species have eyes that are much smaller than would be predicted based solely on body size.” Knowing that rhinos aren’t particularly smart or “visually inclined” can help us forgive its decision to run into the road in order to face off against a large truck. Most animals, even larger ones like elephants and giraffes, have an uneasy truce with large vehicles since they know that bad things happen when they engage with them. Rhinos? Oh no. It’s literally on sight with rhinos (or, on smell?, I guess?) and they won’t hesitate to attack a moving vehicle traveling at 60 mph. It’s all in a day’s work. In a different era, the rhino may have won out against the manmade machine. Today, however, in an age of oil and steel, the rhino did not win a head-to-head challenge with a large vehicle. To be clear, the rhino didn’t die, but it was spun like a top across the road with ease. Even though it didn’t win the encounter, it will tell its tale of courage to its descendants, and how it almost won against the mega-rhino that it probably thought it was attacking. On the other side of things, the driver of the large truck probably has a story that nobody would ever believe, “Oh sure, a rhino charger your truck and then ran off into the jungle.” At least he will have video proof that it happened!
