1. Huntington Beach State Park
Located on the shores of the Atlantic, just 18 miles south of Myrtle Beach, is the Huntington Beach State Park. The park has a sandy beach for swimming, body boarding and saltwater fishing (fish for Drum, pompano and flounder). Visit the nature center to learn about the shorebirds and wildlife that live on the South Carolina shores. The campground has 107 sites with water/electric, 66 with full hookups and 6 tent-only sites. Can you imagine how well you will sleep with fresh ocean breezes blowing across your campsite. 2. Myrtle Beach KOA Resort
Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular beaches in South Carolina. If you want to stay in a resort-like campground near the beach, then the Myrtle Beach KOA is the place to stay. There is a large swimming pool, splash pad, jumping pillow and bike rentals. You can stay in one of the tent sites, RV sites or rent one of the deluxe or basic cabins. Hop on the free beach shuttle to check out the sandy beach for a day of sunbathing or body surfing. Back at the campground you can head to the Withers Swash tidal basin, where you can try your hand at oystering and clamming. That sounds like something delicious to cook up over a campfire for dinner. The Myrtle Beach KOA has everything you need for a relaxing and enjoyable summer camping trip.
3. Charleston: James Island County Park
James Island County Park is a destination in and of itself with a water park, splash pad, climbing wall and disc golf there is so much to do. Bring your pup because there is an awesome dog park with a dog beach! There are 124 RV/Tent sites and 10 vacation cottages, so plenty of options for your stay. Spend your whole vacation at the campground or drive the 6 miles to downtown Charleston for shopping or dining at some of the best restaurants with fresh oysters, crab and lobster. Back at the campground settle in around the campfire and chat with fellow campers.
4. Hilton Head Island: Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort
Located right on Hilton Head Island and 2 miles to some of the most pristine beaches is the luxury Motorcoach Resort. Each site has full hookups, cable TV and WiFi for the modern camper. The resort has several lakeside sites, a swimming pool, club house, pickleball courts and dog park. Spend time at the beach swimming, sunbathing or exploring some of the tide pools. Look for ghost crabs, horseshoe crabs, starfish and sea urchins. Look but don’t touch so you don’t disturb their natural habitat. 5. Lake Murray: Dreher Island State Park
Just outside of Columbia, SC, about 15 miles NW of downtown is Lake Murray, one of the largest lakes in the state. With it being so close to the city you can imagine it is a popular recreational lake. One of the best places to camp on Lake Murray is at the Dreher Island State Park. The park includes three islands that you can access by roads and there are two camping areas including some lakefront campsites. There are 97 sites for RV or tents, 15 tent-only sites and 5 villas right on the lake. Lake Murray is great for swimming, boating and fishing with some of the best striped bass fishing in the area. There are three boat ramps to choose from to take you boat out to fish or explore. Set up your camp chairs right on the shore of the lake for some amazing sunsets before turning in. Sounds like one of the best places to camp in South Carolina this summer!
